  • Presenting academic papers outside the University
  • Giving lectures and seminars outside the University
  • External examining
  • Editing academic journals or a book series
  • Reviewing books
  • Refereeing academic articles
  • Acting as QAA reviewer or a member of a REF panel
  • Acting as a member of a research council
  • Acting on the board of a research charity
  • Serving on a research committee of a government department
  • Acting on QUANGOs or similar bodies
  • Sitting on the governing body of another educational institution
  • Serving a learned or professional association
  • Writing popularising books within the relevant discipline
  • Writing text books in the relevant discipline
  • Providing information and interviews to the media on topics within the discipline
  • Writing and presenting a television or radio series
  • Writing regular articles for newspapers or magazines
  • Curating, or advising on, a temporary exhibition or permanent collection

Depending on how they are contracted, the following types of activity may constitute consultancy, either academic or private. Normally, prior permission will be required to carry them out, regardless of how they are contracted:

  • Holding executive directorships
  • Holding non-executive directorships
  • Working for a University spin-out company
  • Working for a start-up company
